Bed, Book and Banana
I know what you’re thinking: this is X-rated stuff. What the hell is she doing in bed with a banana? And what kind of book does she need for that?
The same kind of book I always need, of course – really good, page-turning fiction. But yes, you’re right, the banana is the crux of the matter, and, once I discovered how well it went with the aforementioned bed and book… Yes, I’m guilty!
Just not as guilty as you’re imagining!
But I must admit it is one of my secret joys – sneaking off to bed with a good book and a banana sandwich – you know the kind, soft brown bread with butter and a mashed up banana – yum! By the time I left home for university, I was no stranger to this delight. I’d enjoyed it since childhood. However, eating in bed was not encouraged by my parents. Brushing your teeth before sleep was, so it never entered my head to eat in bed last thing at night when I’d only have to get up again to brush my teeth.
I wasn’t a huge student rebel. But as my roommate and I retired to our beds one night, complete with coffee and banana sandwiches and novels which were certainly NOT required course reading, I had this blinding revelation that I really didn’t need to get up again to brush my teeth if I didn’t want to. I could go straight to sleep once the sandwich and the book were finished. Who would know or care? So with a deliciously guilty feeling in my bones, that’s exactly what I did.
Loved it.
It’s a rare treat, though, because before you do it again you really have to have time to forget about the down-side, which is waking up with a yuchy mouth and scummmy teeth. And of course, too often and you have to involve the dentist.
So yes, that’s my guilty pleasure. It could be worse; it could be more exciting. But it’s mine, I love it, and I’m not giving it up!
What do you eat in bed with a good book? Or don’t you?

Ok Marie You got me on the title of your blog post LOL
I have to say, peanut butter and banana sandwiches are way up on my list of favourite things.
I don't like to eat in bed too much but I have been known to fall asleep with a few popcorn kernels. LOL I do enjoy having a nice coffee or hot chocolate beside my bed and I do like to dip cookies so I usually have a few of them to go along with it.
Thanks for stopping by today and for a great blog post!
:) Glad I got you, Michelle! Thanks for having me today and letting me ramble about bananas!
I'm with you on the coffee dunking! Although I don't really do popcorn. Eating in bed certainly has it's dangers. My husband once went to sleep with his face in his curry :).

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches are a staple in my life. I totally get what you mean, Marie. It feels naughty to go to bed without brushing your teeth. And when you're reading a dirty book on top of that, it's downright forbidden. But it's oh so worth it. So long as you can sneak out of bed early enough to brush before anyone is exposed. ;) Great post!
I don't usually read in bed. I usually sit on my couch and read. I do sometimes eat when I read, but has to be something i can do with one hand, because the other hand is holding the book. Banana, chips, or 1/2 of sandwich. Love your books and can't wait to read the 3rd book of the series.

Hi Julie - I confess I've never tried peanut butter and banana together. I must be too British :). You're right though - as in so many things, it's the naughtiness that's appealing :).
Hi Chris! Yes, one handed food is safest - otherwise you can make an awful mess of the book, to say nothing of the bed or couch :). Thanks for the kind words!
Marie
Love reading in bed too... but I always wake up with a sore neck... but the kindle has made it so much easier... except I sometimes blind hubby with the light...hehe
One of life's big tragedy is that Banana's are ludicrously expensive ever since the cyclone took out our crops in Australia....*Sigh* How I miss them. I LOVE mashing up a banana, spreading it on toast and sprinkling sugar on it...Mmmmm
THAT really is worthy of a GP post, thanks for sharing Marie.
I am shamefully tardy this week with mine, but I went away this week and didn't take my Mac Book, oh the horror! Alas mine is up now :)

Hi tfwalsh! My husband doesn't mind the light - it's when I'm reading a funny book and my chortles shake the bed that he gets restive :).
Hi CJ - glad you enjoy and agree :). Sorry about the banana crops, though :(. Still, at least you CAN grow them in your country. Try planting a banana tree in Scotland and it would laugh in your face before it shivered to death :).
