No Rest for the Wicked by Kresley Cole

Kaderin "the Cold Hearted" & Sebastian Wroth's book

No Rest for the Wicked (Immortals After Dark 3)

By Kresley Cole
Book Blurb:A soldier weary of life . . . Centuries ago, Sebastian Wroth was turned into a vampire – a nightmare in his mind – against his will. Burdened with hatred and alone for ages, he sees little reason to live. Until an exquisite, fey creature comes to kill him, inadvertently saving him instead.
A Valkyrie assassin dispatched to destroy him . . .
When Kaderin the Cold Hearted lost her two beloved sisters to a vampire attack long ago, a benevolent force deadened her sorrow – accidentally extinguishing all of her emotions. Yet whenever she encounters Sebastian, her feelings – particularly lust – emerge multiplied. For the first time, she's unable to complete a kill.
Become competitors in a legendary hunt.
The prize of the month-long contest is powerful enough to change history, and Kaderin will do anything to win it for her sisters. Wanting only to win her, forever, Sebastian competes as well, taking every opportunity – as they travel to ancient tombs and through catacombs, seeking relics around the world – to use her new feelings to seduce her. But when forced to choose between the vampire she's falling for and reuniting her family, how can Kaderin live without either?

No Rest for the Wicked could basically described as a mythology legend meets the Amazing Race with a touch of Indian Jones adventure added in for good measure.  All in all, it was fabulous, exciting and very sexy. I liked it a lot.

Kaderin suffered a heavy personal loss and carried around a mountain of guilt for hundreds of years. She had allowed one particular vampire to live during a battle only to have that same vampire turn around and behead her own two sisters (they were triplets). She felt that burden on her shoulders alone. Kaderin had so much hate, anger and disgrace in her soul that it turned her into a cold but very effective warrior. It was almost cruel that fate somehow matched her up with Sebastian, who is a vampire.

I should add, that Sebastian is a self loathing vampire. He was turned by his own brother who just happens to be Nikolai Wroth from book 1, A Warlord Wants Forever.  Sebastian never wanted the vampire life and as his own brother declined his dying wish to be left to die as a human. Even after three hundred years, he still had not embraced the vampire life. He purposely alienated himself from living creatures (both human and Lore) and lead a solitary life in a castle far away in Russia.

Kaderin's hate for vampires mixed in with Sebastian's desire to be a "blooded" couple turned out to be quite the ride. I think if a vampire's need and compulsion to be with his Bride wasn't derived with such determination, I'd have to give Sebastian major props for the amount of rejection he took from Kaderin. He was relentless and not willing to back down yet he was such a gentleman. It's easily identifiable that his mannerisms were stuck in a time hundreds of years earlier when men had to be the protector of women. And what a protector he is!

The Hie (Amazing Race for non humans) was exhilarating. From climbing sharp mountains, battling basilisks, trudging through minefields, swimming with blood thirsty sharks and the list goes on. All this adventure while competitors freely maimed each other to get ahead. It was brutal. I liked how sneaky Sebastian was at entering the contest along side Kaderin and how he was able to eventually get her to work together with him. Even if he had to strike out sexy deals every now and then.

Great action. Great suspense and super characters with steamy sexy scenes. I can't wait to jump into the next book, Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night.

Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors by Molly Harper

Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors (Jane Jameson book 4)

By Molly Harper

Book Blurb:
Just as Jane Jameson’s unlife seems to be stabilizing, fate sinks its fangs firmly into her butt. Despite her near-phobia of all things marital, her no-frills nighttime nuptials to her sexy boyfriend Gabriel are coming along smoothly. But the road to wedded bliss gets bumpy when a teenage acquaintance is fatally wounded in front of Jane’s shop and she turns him to save his life. The Council pronounces Jane responsible for the newborn vamp until he can control his thirst.

Jane’s kitchen at River Oaks barely holds enough Faux Type O to satiate the cute teen’s appetite and maintain Gabriel’s jealous streak at a slow simmer. As if keeping her hyperactive childe from sucking the blood out of the entire neighborhood isn’t enough to deal with, the persnickety ghost of Jane’s newly deceased Grandma Ruthie has declared a war on the fanged residents of River Oaks. Suddenly,
choosing monogrammed cocktail napkins and a cake that she can’t eat seems downright relaxing in comparison.

Tensions inside the house are growing…and outside, a sinister force is aiming a stake straight for the center of Gabriel’s heart. Most brides just have to worry about choosing the right dress, but Jane fears that at this rate, she’ll never make it down the aisle for the wedding all nice girls dream of…

What a delight is was to return to Jane Jameson's world at the Hollow and River Oaks.

I was just introduced to Molly Harper's "Nice Girls" series this year so my wait for book 4 wasn't all that long...thankfully. Regardless, it was worth the wait. So many fun and wacky cool things happened in this book that I don't know where to start. Okay I can't hold this news in; Gabriel and Jane get married!! *throws flower pedals*

This is one of those book reviews that I simply want to say how much I loved the book and end it at that. With the exception of the obvious wedding, I don't want to give away any spoilers.

Jane's witty and humourous personality blazed all through Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbours. Page for page the book held my smile. I love that Molly Harper didn't decide to draw out Jane and Gabriel's dating life over a dozen books and just gave the fans what they craved. I know some great stories can come from them being a married couple and I hope Molly Harper continues with more of the series.

The characters really drive these "Nice Girls" stories and book 4 happily included all the friends that we have come to love. We even get introduced to a few new ones that perked my interest. It seems that River Oaks inherits a new teenage resident, Jamie. We were briefly introduced to Jamie in a previous book and in this book 4, Jane needs to turn the teen into a vampire in order to save him. Jamie becomes Jane's childe (I need to figure out how to say that word) and it makes for an interesting story line that comes across as giving birth to a teenager. As Jamie becomes Jane's full responsibility, I grew to really like their relationship. It added a great maternal element to Jane and it suited her. I also adored all the tense moments and then the fatherly type of relationship Gabriel had with the testing teen. Jamie opens the door for some potentially funny family dynamic future stories.

Even though Jamie is a teen in his last year of school, I felt he was pretty mature for his age. Considering he was disowned by real parents for now being a vampire, he seemed to hold it together really well. I was actually a bit surprised on how well he was holding up considering he was brought up in a really close family. I was really frowning on the treatment he received from his mom and dad. I also gathered that he is really good looking and was popular at school so I was curious why he wasn't trying to seek out some of his buddies. At that age, friends are everything. Lots of story still to be told there for sure.

Throughout the planning stages of the wedding Jane is stressing out about her mom, her newly formed relationship with her sister, her newly dead relationship with her wicked grandmother, siring Jamie and oh yes of course, someone trying to kill either Jane or Gabriel. So a typical time at River Oaks. I loved reading every moment and every sarcastic funny conversation. So worth the read.

You could read Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors as a stand alone but I would not recommend missing out on all the fun it took to get to book 4.

Teaser: swoon worthy proposal, poison arrow that can hurt vampires, wicked Grandmother, touching father/daughter moment

Nice Girls Don't Live Forever by Molly Harper

Jane Jameson's book 3

Nice Girls Don't Live Forever

by Molly Harper

Book Blurb:
Nothing sucks the romance out of world travel like a boyfriend who may or may not have broken up with you in a hotel room in Brussels. Jane Jameson’s sexy sire, Gabriel, has always been unpredictable. But the seductive, anonymous notes that await him at each stop of their international vacation, coupled with his evasive behavior over the past few months, finally push Jane onto the next flight home to Half Moon Hollow — alone, upset, and unsure whether Gabriel just ended their relationship without actually telling her.
Now the children’s-librarian-turned-vampire is reviving with plenty of Faux Type O, some TLC from her colorful friends and family, and her plans for a Brave New Jane. Step One: Get her newly-renovated occult bookstore off the ground. Step Two: Support her best friend, Zeb, and his werewolf bride as they prepare for the impending birth of their baby . . . or litter. Step Three: Figure out who’s been sending her threatening letters, and how her hostile pen pal is tied to Gabriel. Because for this nice girl, surviving a broken heart is becoming a matter of life and undeath...

I'm really enjoying this Jane Jameson series. This third book, Nice Girls Don't Live Forever is probably my favourite so far. There was a lot of character development and a captivating story line. I loved it.

I wish Jane was a real person because I'd love to have her as a friend. She is so good to her friends. She is supportive, generous and humourous and in return, her friends are just as companionable back to her. What a brilliant cast of secondary characters this series has. Molly Harper relies on this secondary cast to carry their weight of the story almost as much as her main protagonist, Jane. If it wasn't for Jane's friends, there wouldn't be much of a story at all. This opinion is not meant as a slight at all. Please accept it as the highest praise because I love a story that includes an engaging cast of characters that can hold a reader's interest. Kudos!

Nice Girls Don't Live Forever held quite the puzzling mystery over on the readers trying to figure out what Jane's sire/boyfriend, Gabriel was up to. I believed from the beginning that Gabriel would never have cheated on Jane but why was he so distant and mysterious? If he was so in love with Jane, why couldn't he share some of his deep dark secrets? Gabriel's holding back of information sure did a mind number on Jane and I was feeling sorry for her. Jane handled herself really well. She earned my respect by not chasing him down, crying and forcing him to talk. She held her own by carrying on and being with her friends. She did a great job not sticking them all in the middle.

The only wee bit of respect I lost for Jane was when Gabriel and her do start and have that long overdue talk, she blurts out a few insecurities about not understanding why Gabriel would want her. GAH! I was so hoping she wouldn't be THAT girl. I mean in real life, those girls are a dime a dozen but I wish Jane thought of herself more highly. I wanted to mold Jane into role model and I guess that's not fair.

Jane comes around again for me though with a few  awesome sister scenes and I continue to love her relationship with her mom. The pair crack me up. I want to limit the amount of spoilers because there is a lot of great scenes in Nice Girls Don't Live Forever. But I have to share one of my favourite scenes.

"Andrea opened her door, wearing Dick’s “Virginia is for Lovers” T-Shirt and no pants, drinking a Budweiser from the can. A Wrestlemania highlights DVD was playing in the background.

“Baby, who is it?” Dick asked, coming out of the kitchen, wearing one of those beer-drinking helmets, jeans and no shirt.

“I take it back, you are not the same woman I met a year ago,” I told Andrea.

Andrea burped noiselessly under her breath. “I’m aware."

Funny, emotional, frustrating, the whole package is here to enjoy and I so hope you take the time out to introduce yourself to Jane and her wonderful friends.
